Contamination: 40K Pounds Of F.F. Chicken Breast Grilled Strips Recalled

Nearly 40,000 pounds of Foster Farms Chicken Breast Grilled Strips are being recalled by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service on fears that the meat is contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

FSIS said the agency is recalling 3.5 pounds of plastic resealable bags of frozen Chicken Breast Grilled Strips with an Aug. 5 produced date. The packaging number is P-33901 and has a best by date of Aug. 5, 2015. The affected products were sent to warehouses in California, Texas, Utah and Washington.

The company found the potential Listeria contamination during its routine inspection. Retailers were notified to remove the infected food product so customers could not purchase it. FSIS feels some customers may have already purchased the product.

According to the FSIS statement, some product had been put aside but there was some that had already been shipped out. At this time, no reports of illnesses have been received by the company or FSIS.

This recall is another highlight in the poultry industry that chickens are given high doses of antibiotics to fight different diseases and increase the rate of their growth. When antibiotic-fed poultry chicken is fed to humans, it makes them become antibiotic resistant.

Listeria monocytogenes results in a bacterial infection known as a Listeriosis, which can cause confusion, convulsions, diarrhea, fever, headache, muscle aches and stiff neck. Listeriosis is dangerous to pregnant woman and can cause premature delivery, miscarriages, stillbirths and infections in the newborn baby. It can also cause serious infections for people who have a weak immune system.

Listeriosis is treated with antibiotics and people who have consumed Listeria-infected foods and have symptoms need to seek medical attention right away.

  1. The article is incorrect when it states:
“When antibiotic-fed poultry chicken is fed to humans, it makes them become antibiotic resistant.”

antibiotic resistance is a quality of some bacteria but consuming cooked chicken that harbors antibiotic resistant bacteria does not make a person antibiotic resistant.
