WHO: Ebola Outbreak Spreading Amongst African Villages

The Ebola outbreak began in the early part of this year in southeast Guinea’s forested villages, with months passing of it being undiagnosed. However, on March 23, news of the outbreak finally reached the World Health Organization (WHO), but, by then, the outbreak cost 29 people their lives.

Since this time, WHO has released nine more updates on the ever-increasing outbreak that’s gotten some notice in the West but has created widespread panic through the African continent:

  • On March 24, the outbreak is evolving quickly, claiming 59 people their lives with 86 confirmed cases.
  • On March 27, the disease has spread to Sierra Leone and Liberia, claiming 66 lives with 103 confirmed cases.
  • On March 30, WHO reports that 70 people have died and there are 112 cases confirmed.
  • On April 3, WHO said Ebola has a 90 percent fatality rate; 83 people have died and there are 127 confirmed cases.
  • On April 6, more than 90 people have died and the first cases of the diseases are suspected in Ghana and Mali.  The trouble has started in remove villages.

Reuters reported that a mob attacked a Guinea Ebola treatment center, with accusations that it infected the town with the disease.  People in other villages are no longer shaking hands.

One doctor said the organization knows how scared the local population is about the Ebola outbreak. However, patients need to stay in treatment centers to fight against it.

Ebola has no cure, and because it’s a rare disease that affects mainly poor African villages, pharmaceutical companies have not seen a real need to study the virus.

Ebola’s effects are ghastly: fever, weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, and external and internal bleeding. The disease is thought to come from infected animals, mainly the fruit bat that then infects apes, monkeys, pigs and, lastly, humans.
