Verizon has been working hard to increase the speed of its wireless network while also surpassing its rivals in the 5G race.

According to Roger Gurnani, chief information officer at Verizon, the company is going to test its new 5G (fifth generation) wireless technology sometime in the next year, and could become the first wireless carrier to have a 5G network within two years’ time.

Gurnani said Verizon, over the course of the next year, will be field testing the new technology. He said commercial deployment is anticipated to occur in 2017. Similar to when the 4G technology pushed the industry to a new faster download and improved connectivity age, the company sees 5G taking hold on the market.

For the majority of companies, 2020 is the expected target date for 5G technology to launch. Verizon does admit that its 5G technology is only going to become available within the next couple of years.

Verizon was the first wireless company to give the market 4G LTE, which stands for fourth generation long-term evolution. This happened six years ago.

Verizon said it would begin testing its 5G technology is 2016, and said it would work alongside Cisco, Nokia, Alcatel-Lucent, Ericcson, Samsung and Qualcomm to develop supportive technologies that will allow people to make the most of the faster connectivity speeds.

According to the company, the advantages of a faster 5G network includes:

  • Ability to deal with more Internet-connected devices
  • 50 times the amount of the present 4G LTE
