Toyota Issues Recall On 1M Corolla, Corolla Matrix and Lexus Vehicles

Although Toyota has reclaimed the top spot as the world’s largest automaker, it is, once again, announcing a major recall of one million of its Corolla, Corolla Matrix and Lexus IS vehicles due to faulty windshield wipers and airbags sold in the United States.

270,000 Lexus IS models are affected by the windshield wiper issue and were sold between 2006 and early 2012. Roughly 752,000 Corolla and Corolla Matrix vehicles, sold between 2003 and 2004, are affected by the airbag control issue.

Toyota said it was possible the Corolla airbags would inadvertently deploy and the Lexus wipers would not work if there was a heavy snow buildup.

General Motors (GM), in two of the biggest markets – U.S. and China -, is the leading automaker. However, in its home country of Japan, Toyota is the frontrunner, with non-Japanese automakers having difficulty competing because of the limited number of dealerships.

In 2012, Toyota vehicle sales have totaled about 9.75 million; this beat General Motors’
9.29 million. Japan’s earthquake and tsunami in 2011 and back to back damaging recalls in 2009 and 2010 hurt the automaker’s vehicle sales.

During those years, over eight million Toyota vehicles were recalled over sticky accelerator pedals. The production and sales of eight models were temporarily suspended and the company settled on a $1.1 billion class-action suit the owners brought against the company on losses they incurred because of the accidental acceleration.

In 2012, the company had two major recalls: 7.4 million vehicles were recalled in October because of a possible fire hazard with a power window issue. In November, 2.8 million cars were recalled over issues with the hybrid and steering systems.
