Rescue to Recovery Mission: Denver Responders Search For Bodies Of 2 Young Children

Two young Denver, N.C. children are feared dead after a wall of dirt from a home construction site fell and trapped them under the site Sunday. According to a fire official, crews worked through the night to locate their bodies.

Emergency crews said the effort to find the 6-year-old girl and 7-year-old boy has turned from a rescue mission into a recovery mission.

Dion Burleson, a public information officer with the Lincoln County Emergency Services, said one of the children’s fathers called 911 around 6 p.m. to report the incident. Within minutes, crews were at the scene to locate the two kids but unable to do so.

Crews from around the area including Charlotte began using climbing gear and shovels trying to reach the pair Sunday. Backhoes were used to scoop dirt from the deep hole. Burleson said it’s difficult to discern just how deep down the kids are.

According to the neighbors, the children are related – cousins – and the man who owned the property was in the process of digging a basement out for a house he is building.

Burleson said both the family members and emergency responders are distraught by this tragic, senseless incident. He said it’s a horrible night for the citizens of Denver.
