Obama Says Sorry To Americans Losing Health Insurance Coverage Due To Obamacare

After repeatedly saying, in campaigns, during discussions on the law and even after the law was signed, that Americans who loved their health insurance policies could keep them, President Barack Obama said sorry to those Americans who are now losing their health insurance policies because of his law. He did not apologize for breaking those promises, however.

Obama said he was sorry these Americans have found themselves in this position after he assured them that if they liked their plans, they could keep them. He said the government has to work tirelessly to show people we are listening to them and do what they can to deal with people who are now in this difficult position because of the law.  3.5 million Americans have received cancellation notices on their policies from their health insurance company.

The apology comes at the same time the White House is dealing with an infinite number of problems with the rollout of its “Obamacare” health care law.  The healthcare.gov website was supposedly designed to help Americans easily purchase insurance; but, has been plagued with numerous technical problems since its launch on Oct. 1

Now, there is scrutiny on how the president initially tried selling the law to the public. A significant amount of focus was placed on the president’s promise “Americans could keep their health insurance policy if they liked it.”  However, the law alone made Obama’s promise hard to keep. After all, it stated insurance coverages have to meet specific standards and any that didn’t could not be sold anymore, unless the policies went through a grandfathering process. In essence, some policies were going to be cancelled no matter what.

The White House said under the rules, less than five percent of Americans would have to get new coverage. However, the United States has over 300 million people, and five percent translates into 15 million people.
