Microsoft Updates Causing System Crashes and Reboots, Company Pulls All August Updates

Microsoft pulls August updates after getting reports of system crashes and machine restarts.

According to Microsoft, the problem involve four of its individual updates that address both the features and security of its operating softwares such as Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. It’s recommended people to actually uninstall the newest update to return the computer to its original condition.

Microsoft has recommended customers immediately uninstall the update. And, the company said as a further precaution, the links for 2982791 security update has been removed.

There are three big issues of the four patches that relate to the August update: fonts not working correctly, fonts are installed in a wrong location and crashing computers with the “0x50 Stop” error message.

Microsoft said the fonts installed in places other than the “%windir%\fonts\” are not changeable when started in an active session, causing the message “File in use” to display if users try to change, replace or eliminate them.

Microsoft identified these patches as the problems:

  • “2970228 Update to support the new currency symbol for the Russian ruble in Windows”
  • “2975331 August 2014 update rollup for Windows RT, Windows 8, and Windows Server 2012″
  • “2975719 August 2014 update rollup for Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2 “
  • “2982791 MS14-045: Description of the security update for kernel-mode drivers: August 12, 2014″

If you want to see if you have any of the patches on your computer and you have Windows 8.1, you can go to Metro UI and type in “Programs”. Click on “Programs and Features” and click “View Installed Updates”, which you can find in the upper left-hand corner. The screen will let you see if you’ve recently installed any updates.
