Honda and Other Automakers Issue Recall Over Airbag Defect

Honda Motor Company of Japan is recalling more than two millions vehicles around the world for a defect in the airbag that could cause a fire.

According to Honda, the 2,033,000 vehicles, manufactured between August 2000 and December 2005, were sold in Japan (668,000) and the North America (more than one million). There are 13 kinds of vehicles being recalled, including some popular Accord and Fit models

Honda said there’s a possibility that the front passenger airbag inflators were put together with a improperly manufactured propellant part.

The third largest automaker in Japan said this could lead to the container holding the inflator to rupture when a crashed took place, possibly causing a fire or hurting passengers.

It’s the same issue that plagued top automaker Toyota, which led to a recall of millions of vehicles around the world. Toyota’s recall was issued after a Japanese customer complained that the defect caused a burn on his passenger seat.

Honda said it’s not received any injury reports or complaints in regards to the problem, and is issuing the recall as a safety precaution.

Mazda and Nissan are also recalling vehicles in response to the possible faulty, painful airbag problems. Nissan is recalling more than 755,000 vehicles such as its Cube, Infinity and X-Trail models, produced by 2001 and 2003. Mazda is recalling more than 159,000 vehicles like the RX-8 and Atenza vehicles, produced from 2002 and 2004.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is currently investigating the problem.

Since the airbag problem was first announced, BMW, Honda, Mazda, Nissan and Toyota have recalled over 7.6 million vehicles to fix it.
