General Motors Recalling Thousands of GMC and Chevy Trucks

Thousands upon thousands of GMC and Chevy pickup trucks have been recalled over a possible power steering problem.

According to General Motors, over 690,000 GMC Sierra 1500s and 2014 Chevy Silverado 1500s may be affected. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the problem is the result of a software issue that may lead to a loss in electric power steering assistance for about a second.

The NHTSA said the loss of power steering assist for a split second and suddenly coming back could cause a drive to lose temporary control over the vehicle and raise the chances of an accident.

The majority of the trucks were sold throughout the nation, but another 100,000 were shipped to Canada and other foreign markets.

General Motors said, in a statement, the defect is in correlation to motor vehicle safety and can be found in some 2014 GMC Sierra LD and Chevrolet Silverado LD vehicles. Tne company said the vehicle could temporarily lose its electric power steering and suddenly return, usually in low-speed turning maneuvers. It’s a one-second occurrence that’s the result of a software/electrical problem.

GM has yet to notify the owners of the affected vehicles, but dealerships will get an update for the computer software to address the problem. This fix is free for the owners. GM did not say when the notifications would be sent out.

Potentially affected vehicle owners can visit the NHTSA website and type in the vehicle’s VIN to learn if their vehicle has any recalls like this. GMC owners can talk to customer service at 1-800-432-8782. Chevrolet owners can reach out to customer service at 1-800-222-1020.

Tim Wilkinson, a GM spokesman, did not provide any information on whether any injuries or accidents were the result of the recall.
