Death Of 26-Year-Old Woman Marks 9th Pedestrian Fatality Since Start Of 2014 In City

A 26-year old Upper West Side Manhattan woman was killed after she was hit by two cars while crossing 96th Street between West End Avenue and Broadway.

According to the New York Police Department, Samantha Lee was near her home when she was clipped by an ambulance’s driver’s side window, which was headed west. After being clipped, she fell to the ground in the eastbound lane and was struck by a car going east. Responding paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene. Both drivers were on the scene after the accident.

Lee was the second pedestrian killed during the weekend, resulting from traffic accidents. On Sunday morning, Pedro Santiago was killed when he was struck while riding a bike in Harlem. An NYPD spokeswoman said the department counts bike deaths as pedestrian deaths.

Since the start of 2014, there have been nine recorded pedestrian deaths.

Lee is the third person to be killed in a traffic accident in the one-block area of the accident. On Jan. 10, a nine-year-old boy was killed after being hit by a taxi at the intersection of West End Avenue and 97th Street. 30 minutes before the boy’s death, a 73-year-old man was struck by a tour bus and killed at Broadway and 96th Street.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said the number of traffic deaths is an epidemic. Therefore, he has recently launched a task force to come up with a plan that will decrease the number of them.
