Over 150,000 Nap Nanny baby recliners are being recalled by four well-known national retailers – Toys R Us/Babies R Us, Diapers.com, Buy Buy Baby and Amazon.com – upon reports that five infants have died.

At the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s request, the companies have recalled both Generations One and Two of the Nap Nanny along with the recliner’s Chill model.

The agency said the products have defects in their design, instructions and warnings, which can post a serious risk for injury and deaths to the infants.

Along with the fatalities, there have been around 100 reports of children almost tumbling over the seats sides or children hanging out of them, even with the harness being used. The portable recliners have a fitted fabric cover and a foam base that’s shaped like a bucket seat.

The affected models include ones made and sold between 2009 and 2012 (around 55,000) along with 100,000 Chill models that were sold in 2011 and after. The retail price of these products was $130.

According to the CPSC, the four retailers are taken part in the recall because the manufacturer is not available or willing to participate in the recall. Nap Nanny developer Baby Matters owner Leslie Gudel said the company went out of business because of the incessant battle with the agency costing them a sum of money.

Gudel sent her condolences to the families who lost their children while improperly using the Nap Nanny. However, she said, it does not mean the product caused the death or is dangerous, citing that a child could suffocate from a blanket or crib bumper.

In 2010, the CPSC recalled the products after it learned that one child and 22 near-falls had occurred with the first Nap Nanny generation. In this recall, Baby Matters and the agency paired up to provide an $80 discount coupon for owners to purchase the newer models with up-to-date warnings and instructions.

Since that time, the CPSC learned of 70 more reports of parents having close calls along with the death reports.
