Proud Boys, Others Listed As Terrorist Organization In Canada
The Canadian government recently listed The Proud Boys, along with 12 other extremist groups, as terrorist organizations – a list that includes al-Qaida and the Islamic State.
Public Safety Canada said the Proud Boys’ actions meant they met the legal threshold to be deemed a hazard. The agency said there are grounds to warrant such a designation if the entity has purposely participating or committing a terrorist attack or act on in association with a terrorist organization.
The agency said it considers the group a “neo-fascist organization that engages in political violence” with misogynistic, anti-Semitic, Islamophobic, white supremacists and anti-immigrant ideologies.
Public Safety Canada said the group had a primary role in the January attack. They said group leaders planned out their participation by putting together objectives, giving instructions and directing members while the insurrection was going on.
With this designation, banks and financial institutions in Canada will freeze assets tied to the group, and it’s illegal for entities to do business with the group. The government also makes it a crime for anybody to give them support.
Due to the First Amendment, no U.S. law recognizes and outlaws domestic groups as a terrorist.
However, in 2018, the Proud Boys were listed as an extremist group by the FBI who have ties with white nationalism. This designation came about after law enforcement attained an internal report from Washington state.
The Southern Poverty Law Center called the Proud Boys a hate group. The founder, Gavin McInnes, filed a defamation lawsuit in 2019. The group has been tied to numerous violent U.S. episodes that former president Donald Trump has refused to condemn. During the first campaign debate against Joe Biden, he famously told them to “stand back and stand by.”
Canada also saw an issue with white supremacy and far-right movements, with several group members crossing the border.
Canada’s terrorist group list now lists 73 groups.
