VLC Media Player Downloads Hit 1 Billion Mark

The creators of the VLC media player, an open source and cross-platform media player, has stated that the software has passed 1 billion downloads. This is quite an amazing feat because downloads via Linux are not counted in this list.

The statistics of VLC media player, developed by the VideoLAN organization were tracked since February 2005 when version 0.7.2 was offered. Since then, the open source media player has been downloaded more than 1 billion times according to statistics from the makers. It is important to note that the figures may not be fully accurate and downloads of the VLC media player through various Linux distributions were not included.

The figures given show that version 1.1.11 on the Windows platform is the most popular version with over 181 million downloads. Version 2 was released in February, and the bug fix release of version 2.0.1 is also doing well with measured collectively over 75 million downloads.

VLC owes its popularity not only to the fact that it is a cross-platform media player and freely available, but also because almost all video and audio formats and codecs can be played with it. In addition, the software itself already has the required codec libraries. Moreover, the media player is capable of streaming video, has a modular design, and it was the first open source media player that could play encrypted DVDs on OS X and Linux with support for the libdvdcss library.

Even though the numbers may not be accurate but downloading even half of what VLC achieved is still quite an amazing feat.
