Virgin Airlines to Offer In-Flight Cellphone Calling and Texting

Posted on May 18, 2012

Virgin Atlantic airlines will soon allow passengers to use their own cellular telephones to make phone calls and texts on their planes during a flight. On some flights the company has made it possible to use internet via WiFi connection and now they decided to take it a step further.

The British airline is to offer this service in cooperation with AeroMobile, with prices expected to be around the usual roaming rate. These are just a few details reported by the British newspaper, The Telegraph. Passengers flying Virgin Airlines from London to New York will be the first to have these telecom services at their disposal. However, calling and texting during takeoff and landing is not possible and this feature may not be used in U.S. airspace.

In time Virgins Airbus A330 aircrafts on ten different routes will have calling and text messaging capabilities. The technology for this telecommunication aboard seventeen airplanes will be supplied and maintained by AeroMobile. The British airline wants the telecom services to be used in its aircraft before the end of the year.

Virgin Airlines offers, in-flight WiFi services just like many other airlines. However, very few airline companies provide specialized services such as Internet calling and messaging.

It will be quite interesting to see how this service goes as some passengers do feel uneasy every time someone takes out their cellphone on the airplane, let alone text and make a phone call.
