Saved By The Bell Actor Succumbs To Cancer
Dustin Diamond, well-known for his nerdy character “Screech” on the TV show “Saved By The Bell,” died from lung cancer. He was 44.
Diamond was diagnosed with the aggressive malignant cancer three weeks ago that rapidly spread through his system. Doctors immediately started chemotherapy on him to treat the small cell carcinoma they reported was stage 4
According to his Diamond’s agent, Robert Paul, the star wasn’t in any pain upon his death.
Diamond started his career with the Good Morning, Miss Bliss series, revolving around junior high students. The show lasted a single season but led to the very successful spin-off Saved By The Bell. It also starred Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Mario Lopez, Tiffani Thiessen, Lark Voorhies and Elizabeth Berkley.
That show focused on a functional California high school – Bayside – lasted four seasons beginning in 1989. The show tackled the numerous issues facing students, including taking drugs, relationships, homelessness, etc.
Despite Diamond’s success as Samuel “Screech” Powers, his career failed to garner traction. Since his Saved By The Bell times, he has only bit parts.
He helped to write a tell-all book, “Behind the Bell” that revealed some juicy information about the show, but come to find out, many were fabricated stories.
Diamond was in trouble with the law in 2015 when he was charged and sentenced to four months in prison for disorderly conduct and carrying a concealed weapon after his connection to a bar stabbing. The late actor was released in 2016 for showing good behavior.
