Salmonella Food Poisnong Outbreak Tied To 1,000-Pounds Of Recalled Ground Beef

According to United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials, ground beef developed in Michigan has been linked to a salmonella food poisoning outbreak in five states.

Nobody has yet died from the illness but half of those sick have been hospitalized. Nine illnesses were found in Michigan with several cases scattered around in the states of Wisconsin, Iowa , Illinois and Arizona.

Last month, seven people in an unknown suburban Detroit restaurant consumed kibbeh, a rare ground beef dish. Health officials have warned consumers not to consume uncooked (raw) meat.

The cases, according to the CDC, are linked to the recall of over 1,000 pounds of ground beef from a couple of Michigan-based establishments Jouni Meats in Sterling Heights and Gab Halal Foods in Troy that was made last week.

The CDC recommends consumers throw away any unused portions of the ground beef or take it back to where they purchased it. Consumers should also look through the freezer for any of the recalled product.

People, within 72 hours of being exposed to the salmonella bacteria, could experience abdominal cramps, fever and diarrhea. Salmonellosis can last up to seven days with the majority of folks recovering without seeking treatment. Children under five, older adults and people who have a weak immune system have a great chance of a more serious illness.

Approximately 42,000 cases of salmonellosis happen in the U.S. every year.
