Obama’s Sore Throat A Result Of Acid Reflux

President Barack Obama’s two-week long sore throat is the result of acid reflux, the White House said.

On Saturday, the 53-year-old president visited the Bethesda, Maryland Walter Reed National Military Medical Center to undergo diagnostic tests. A Fort Belvoir Medical Center ear, nose and throat doctor performed a fiber optic exam. Upon recommendation of the doctor, the motorcade made the 30 minute drive in rainy weather to the hospital.

While at the hospital, a CT scan was carried out in which the results came back normal. According to Obama’s physician and Director of the White House Medical Unit Dr. Ronny L. Jackson, he and the unnamed specialist said the fiber optic exam revealed the president has soft tissue swelling in the back of his throat. Both determined the president should have a routine CT scan to rule anything further out.

Jackson reiterated that the CT scan did not reveal anything and was clean.

He said Obama’s symptoms are consistent with soft tissue inflammation that occurs with acid reflux. As such, Jackson said, the president will receive treatment for that very diagnosis. He didn’t say how long the treatment will last.

Acid reflux occurs when the stomach’s contents flow back and up the esophagus, which causes an array of symptoms like heartburn. Treatments include the use of over the counter or prescription medications like antacids and the avoidance of certain types of foods.

Josh Earnest, White House press secretary, said Jackson suggested Obama should have the diagnostic test Saturday afternoon since the president had some free time. Obama could not go golfing because of the rain, which is where he spends most of his Saturdays…weather permitting. He said Saturday’s test was only done in a hurry because it was convenient for the president and stressed it was not an urgent matter.

In May, Obama had a physical exam, which revealed the president was in great health.
