Former NFL Kicker Dies In One-Vehicle Accident Near Nashville Home

Rob Bironas, a former kicker for the Tennessee Titans, died following an overnight car wreck in Nashville.

Metro police said Birona, 36, got into a one-vehicle accident around 11 p.m. Saturday after he lost control over his speeding SUV. The vehicle left the roadway and hit many trees before it landed upside down in a drainage culvert.

The former player was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Don Aaron, a spokesman for Metro Police, said Bironas was turning off of Franklin Pike onto Battery Lane. It looked like Bironas was going home when the accident occurred. The crash happened near his home.

Aaron said the scene had no evidence of alcohol playing a factor into the accident.

Aaron said a chaplain with the Metro police was with his wife Rachel Bradshaw, the daughter of Terry Bradshaw, a Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback.

Bironas was with the Titans for nine seasons, and was released from the team in March.

The team released a statement Sunday morning, saying they were deeply saddened to hear about the death of their former kicker. It continued on saying Bironas had a significant impact on the team as a player and touched the lives of many people within the Nashville community. The statement said its thoughts and prayers were with his family.

In 2008, he began the Rob Bironas Fund in Nashville. The fund donates to organizations that help support children.

Bironas had worked out with the Buccaneers during the offseason, and was seen with the Lions earlier in the week.

In his nine-year career, he had more than 1,000 points and made 239 out of 279 (85.7 percent) of his field-goal attempts, ranking fourth in accuracy for the NFL.

Confirmation of his death was posted on his social media accounts within hours of the wreck. It read that it appreciates everyone’s prayers and giving the family privacy during this time.
