Fiat Chrysler Issues Second Recall In Two Months
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has issued its second recall in two months over the hacking issue.
The latest vehicle recall, which was ordered Friday, will ensure the more than 7,000 2015 Jeep Renegade vehicles outfitted with 6.5-inch touchscreens are installed with software that keeps computer hackers from taking the car over.
The Renegade model is fairly new, so nearly half of the vehicles are still in dealers’ hands. The current issue is not the same as the one that forced the car maker to recall nearly 1.4 million vehicles in July.
Owners will be given a thumb drive, allowing them to do the update for themselves. Fiat Chrysler said the latest safety features will ensure the remote access is blocked. The U.S. division said customers don’t have a thing to fear from the hackers.
The company said the software manipulation that recall is referring to takes someone who has extensive, unique technical knowledge. According to Fiat Chrysler, they need to have an extended physical access to the vehicle and time to write the code. It said the recall was being done out of sheer caution.
The recall in July was made after two hackers showed Wired magazine who they were able to take a Jeep SUV over as it was riding down the highway with a journalist sitting in the driver’s seat. They were able to hack the vehicle with its UConnect infotainment system. They were able to control both the AC and sound system. In the end, the car was in a ditch.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), it could look at launching an investigation to determine if the recall is going to be effective. The agency said the recall is a step in the right direction to protection its customers and is a precedent on how the agency and industry responds to cyber-security susceptibilities.
