Chocolate Covered Marshmallow Eggs Being Recalled Over Possible Salmonella Contamination
Several lots of Chocolate Covered Marshmallow Eggs are being recalled due to possible salmonella contamination.
Zachary Confections Inc. issued the voluntary recall and suspended any more production of the treats after testing on one lot found salmonella. In a press release, the company said it would recall much of its product at a sheer caution but, as of yet, there have been no reported illnesses due to the tainted products.
The cases with the following UPC codes are being recalled: 1 00 75186 31797 3, 075186 15797 8. They will have a Best Buy date of Feb. 14, 2014. The recall also extends to the following code dates: D3245D, D3145E, F3145E and D3245E. The product affects chocolate-coated marshmallow eggs that are packed in white egg crates with yellow, green and purple lettering.
The product affects those products made on Feb. 20 and 21 and shipped to stores in the states of Wisconsin, South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa. According to the company, other Zachary Confections made products are not included in this recall.
While the U.S. Federal Food and Drug Administration conducts its investigation of where the source of salmonella is, the production line has been shut down.
Consumers can either throw the products away or take them back to where they bought them for a refund. For additional information about this recall, call 765-654-8356 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. eastern time.
Salmonella poisoning will cause stomach cramping, vomiting, diarrhea and fever. Although infections can resolve itself in several days, some folks – such as children, elderly and people with weak immune systems – may need to be hospitalized.
