Bus Driver Dead, Six-Year-Old Boy Held Hostage In Underground Alabama Bunker
A 67-year-old school bus driver is dead and a six-year-old boy is being held hostage after a gunman stormed a school bus and shot the driver in Midland City and grabbed the child. SWAT teams, police and negotiators are stationed near a rural Alabama underground bunker where the gunman is holding the little boy hostage.
According to the Dale County Sheriff, the 65-year-old suspect shot the driver, whose identity is not yet known, after he refused to release the boy from the bus. He died a time later of those wounds.
Local minister Michael Senn said one girl on the bus said the suspect ordered the majority of the students off the bus, grabbed the six-year-old and shot the driver four times. One 13-year-old who was on the bus has been significantly traumatized by the whole thing.
Authorities have been talking with the suspect by way of a PVC pipe that is connected to a bunker, usually used for tornado protection, on his property. It’s been reported that the suspect was building the bunker for quite a few months and has enough food inside for about four months.
The Associated Press reported that neighbors along the street are unable to live because the road is blocked by police. 54-year-old Claudia Davis, who lives along that road, said she’s had several run-ins with the suspect. She said mostly he would stare at her.
Police have evacuated nearby residents from their homes just as a precaution.
