Arapahoe High School Shooting Victim Succumbs To Injuries

The 17-year-old female Arapahoe High School student who was shot in the head by a fellow classmate on Dec. 13 has succumbed to her injury.

According to a statement released by the hospital, Claire Davis died Dec. 21 with family by her side.  It also read that despite the physicians and nurses’ efforts, along with her fighting spirit, the injuries she sustained in the shooting were just too severe.

The family also released a statement saying they were appreciative for the 17 years they were able to have with her. Her laughter, grace and light that she shared with the world will only get stronger. Her death will not extinguish that. The family appreciated the community’s continuous support and thanked medical staff, school officials and law enforcement for all their hard work.

No date for a public memorial has been set but will be announced in the future.

Davis was critically injured when 18-year-old Karl Pierson shot her. According to Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson, Davis was just a random target. Pierson came to school with a shotgun, machete, Molotov cocktails and ammunition on his body. He was headed toward the library; perhaps after the librarian who disciplined for an undisclosed reason back in September.

Robinson said although the librarian was the intended target that much firepower means he would have tried to hurt many other people at the school, which is situated eight miles from Columbine High School. The librarian was able to escape the school, unscathed.

Pierson fired off five shots and one of the combustible devices before he killed himself, just one minute and 20 second after he entered the school. Robinson credited the sheriff’s deputy’s presence in the school for no further injuries or loss of life.

Pierson was legally able to buy the shotgun from a local store because of his age. He purchased the ammunition the same day as the shooting.
