250+ People In 6 States Sick With Tropical/Subtropical Illness

Posted on July 24, 2013

At least six states – and over 250 people – have contracted some type of stomach bug that may be connected to foodborne illness.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, the cyclospora infection produces flu-like symptoms and diarrhea and has been noted in Connecticut, Georgia, Iowa, Nebraska, Texas and Wisconsin.  10 people have been admitted into the hospital with reported illnesses beginning around mid-June to early July.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is looking at these infections, which are typically found in subtropical or tropical climates and was once linked to imported fresh produce.

The cyclospora infection is spread when people consume water or food laced with feces. According to the FDA, there is no clear indication if the cases are linked.

The CDC said the amount of people who get sick with the illness could increase, as the cause for the outbreak is not known.
