Corduroy, a 26-year-old male cat from Oregon has entered the Guinness World Records as the oldest cat currently alive.

Corduroy briefly held the same title in 2014, before Tiffany Two, another cat aged 27, was identified as being slightly older and beat him to the title. Recent death of Tiffany Two at the age of 27 years, two months and 20 days allowed Corduroy to reclaim the cherished title.

The record holder weighs seven pounds and 29 inches in length.

Ashley Reed Ocura from central Oregon is the proud owner of the cat, which came under her care when he was just seven years old. Corduroy had a brother too – Batman, who enjoyed an above-average lifespan for a cat, living for a healthy 19 years.

Ocura described the champion feline as an active and healthy cat who enjoys hunting in the family’s 160-acre land. The regular exercise and the good care from Ocura’s family probably helped Corduroy and batman live longer. Corduroy was gifted with a live mouse from Petco on his recent birthday in early August, and the meal was instantly accepted with glee. His favourite food included cheddar cheese and mice.

In the past couple of decades, the longevity of cats has increased considerably – from about 7 years in 1980’s to 15 years in the modern day. However, some cats can almost double that like Corduroy did, with the all time record going to Creme Puff from Austin in 2004 who lived an incredible 38 years.

Guinness World Records has published a video in recognition of Corduroy.

According to a Guinness World Records’ official, it is possible that another cat older than Corduroy could be living in the planet right now. If you believe you have a cat that can break the record you can contact Guinness World Records.
