Unnamed Prepackaged Salad Mix May Be Cause Of Stomach Bug Outbreak

Over 350 people in 15 states have gotten sick from the cyclospora stomach bug outbreak, and the cause of it may be linked to bagged salad.

Currently, Iowa has reported the majority of cyclospora cases – 143 have fallen sick. And, the state’s Department of Public Health linked the outbreak to prepackaged salad mix after it learned that 80 percent of the cases being reported used the same mix.

The manufacturer or brand name has yet to be released to the public but contains romaine lettuce, iceberg lettuce, red cabbage and carrots. Ingredients in the package are not thought to be grown in the state. And, the package has been taken off store shelves.

The Nebraska investigation also revealed a salad mix as the course for the outbreak.

Cyclospora cases started appearing early in July, and is found in contaminated food or water. If left untreated, the bug results in watery diarrhea that can last 57 days on average. Certain tests will need to be conducted – in a lab – to determine if one is infected with cyclospora. Other symptoms that can result from the bug include: low grade fever, stomach cramps, vomiting, nausea, muscle aches, fatigue, weight loss, appetite loss, increased gas and bloating.

The FDA has recommended people take proper food handling precautions – wash hands, surfaces and utensil with soapy, hot water before and handling foods. And, completely wash the fresh produce before it is consumed.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report cases have also been reported in Arkansas, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Texas and Wisconsin.
