Twitter Accidentally Resets Too Many Account Passwords

Some folks who logged into Twitter Nov. 8 found that their passwords had been reset due to concerns that their accounts were possibly hacked.

According to the San Francisco-based website, it was an accident that the security precaution was applied to more users than originally intended. Not releasing the number of accounts affected, Twitter said if there is reason to suspect the account had been hacked, it would automatically reset the password and send the account owner email about it and information on how to create a new password.

Twitter apologized for the confusion that was caused by the password resets. The company said it was just trying to reset passwords on those suspected compromised accounts.

People are advised to change their passwords on a regular basis to thwart hackers.

On Thursday, Twitter posted a “bug alert” letting users know the website was trying to fix issues with “tweets” and direct messages disappearing. Twitter support said it was working to resolve the issues.
