The Weather Channel Returns To DirecTV On April 10

When The Weather Channel returns to DirecTV, it will put attention more on weather and less on reality TV.

DirecTV dropped the channel after it found only 20 million viewers were watching the channel. The two sides reached an agreement that allows the channel to return to the satellite line-up on April 10.

All Weather Channel viewers, not just the subscribers of the satellite company, will see the change to the programming. The company is going to decrease the amount of its reality programming by half during the week. This equates to less showings of “Hurricane Hunters”, “Coast Guard Alaska” and others similar to them.

Weather Company CEO David Kenney said he was sorry for the disruption viewers had and vowed to give them news that focused more on the weather.

The agreement between the two parties lets DirecTV customers to have immediate access to local weather information and watch its programming on mobile devices so long as they give their subscriber information.

It’s not known what the financial terms were.

According to Dan York, DirecTV’s chief content officer, the channel being dropped was particularly aggravating for its consumers, but the patience they had led to a better product and deal.

DirecTV will keep WeatherNation, which was the channel the satellite company picked up to replace The Weather Channel. The company said it currently has a multi-year deal with WeatherNation TV Inc.
