The Walking Dead Bests Its Own Ratings With Season 4 Premiere

When The Walking Dead premiered Sunday evening, 16.1 million people checked in with an 8.2 rating among 18 to 49 adults. This is a 30 percent increase in demo rating from the show’s season 3 finale.

The zombie show surpassed every entertainment show, and if you combined every broadcast drama – Betrayal, Once Upon a Time, The Mentalist and The Good Wife – that aired Sunday, they still didn’t come close to the demo rating The Walking Dead generated.  This makes The Walking Dead the biggest telecast for the fall season in adult demo.

According to AMC, the hour bested all sports telecasts so far this fall, which would be a big accomplishment, as it only beat out the entertainment shows last fall without the sports.  The claim is on track to be right, if you define “fall” being started at the end of September when the broadcast season begins. There were several post-season NFL games that ranked higher than the 8.2 The Walking Dead had.

It’ possible that the Cowboys vs. Redskins game that was telecasted on NBC Monday would beat out The Walking Dead; but, for any show to come close to make the claim is fairly significant. And, it’s still beating the other entertainment programs, new and old.

Charlie Collier, president of AMC, thanked fans for their sincerity in welcoming the fourth season of the popular post-apocalypse zombie show by making the premiere episode the highest-rated ever. In The Talking Dead, which is the post-episode chat program, there were 5.1 million viewers with 3.3 million in the demo.
