The Hunger Games – Fifth Best Movie For Opening Day

When “The Hunger Games” opened March 23, it took in more than $68 million dollars for its opening day including nearly $20m that came from midnight showings.  This makes “The Hunger Games” the fifth best opening day movie.

For non-sequels, that’s the best opening day ever. The second best non-sequel opening day happened in 2010 with Alice in Wonderland, which starred Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Mia Washikoska and Anne Hathaway and made $40.8 million.  In fact, this movie began stronger than several blockbusters like Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, The Dark Knight and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1. Still, it fell short of the three Twilight sequels and the final Harry Potter movie: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.

“The Hunger Games” is directed by Gary Ross and stars Jennifer Lawrence. CinemaScores audience gave it a solid “A” rating. The film is based on Suzanne Collins’ first of three books where a teenager is made to partake in a live death match with other teens. 61 percent of the audience were women, compared to Twilight: Breaking Dawn’s 80 percent. “The Hunger Games” has done a good job of attracting men to the movie.

The movie made $155m domestically and another $214 million internationally, beating estimates over $120m even without the help of 3D sales. These sales make it number 3 for the best weekend opening ever!
