Russia Commits $30M To Construction Of Acrobatic Rock’N’Roll Complex

Russia is going to build a $30 million center for Acrobatic Rock’N’Roll, which is the offbeat sport that President Vladimir Putin’s daughter competes in.

30-year-old Katerina Tikhonova is the Russian president’s youngest daughter. She and Dmitry Alekseev, her dance partner, are noted as being the sixth-best rock’n’rollers in Russia; 11th best in the world.

Tikhonova is the World Rock’n’Roll Center’s vice president. She’s a senior official for the sport’s national federation and is chair of the committee for the Russian regional development.

What Is Acrobatic Rock’n’Roll?

The couple will dance to rock hits, and combine with acrobatic stunts and flips.

The center, which is going to be located on one-acre of land, is being developed for the Moscow City Khamovniki State Sports and Dance School – the same school that Tikhonova studied at – and it’s going to be the world’s only specialized facility committed to the sport.

The complex is set to be built in the western part of Moscow and is going to offer a trampoline hall, gymnasium, competition area that includes seating for 2,000 people and a 27-yard pool. It will have a helicopter pad, conference all, a lecture theater and living space for 300 people.

While a Kremlin spokesman said the dedication Tikhonova has for the sport did not play a part in the decision to construct the facility. Many people do not agree.

Lubov Sobol is an opposition politician, and he said Moscow was developing the complex to satisfy the president’s daughter’s personal ambitions. The National Federation said roughly 9,000 Russians are involved in the sport, compared to over 22,000 people who are involved with the archery sport, which only gets $337,000 from the state.

Kresmir Bosnar said there’s no reason to spend that much money on a specific sport, which needs couples. Since it’s not a mass sport, it’s unlikely that millions of people around the world will be partaking in acrobatic rock’n’roll.
