Romney Views Unemployment Rate As Still Dismal

unemployedAfter the release of the latest jobs report on Friday, which noted that the unemployment rate dropped under eight percent, the Romney campaign quickly made clear that the numbers were skewed.

During an Abingdon, Virginia event, Romney suggested the rate did not take into consideration Americans who did not stay with the job market.

He said if people say to themselves, “I give up going back to work. I’ll stay home.” Them they’re no longer counted as part of the job statistics. The unemployment rate may look like it is getting better. However, if the same number of folks are actively working or looking for jobs today as when the day the president took office, then the nation’s actual jobless rate would be approximately 11 percent.

Romney said the main reason the unemployment rate dropped was that more folks have just quit looking for work.

Obama took a more optimistic approach during his Fairfax, Virginia event, saying each month it’s a reminder that people still know someone who is looking for work.  The news today isn’t an excuse to downplay the talk on the economy just to score political points. It’s only a reminder that the country has come a long way and shouldn’t turn back now.
