Randy Travis Brings Lawsuit Against Two Texas Entities Regarding Arrest Record and Video

Country singer Randy Travis has filed a lawsuit in an effort to keep his arrest video on Aug. 7, 2012 from being made public after learning about the numerous Public Information Act requests. The suit seeks $100,000 and a judgment not to release information that includes his arrest transcript and police video that was taken when the Travis was placed under arrest.

Travis plead guilty to DUI and was sentenced to two years’ probation, a six-month suspended jail sentence and a $2,000 fine. The judge has agreed not to make the transcript or dash camera arrest video available to the public.

However, the Texas attorney general’s office, said the judge has no discretion to keep the video from being made public. According to the office, the Department of Public Safety can only withhold motor vehicle records and medical records. Travis’ suit names both the attorney general’s office and the Texas DPS.

There have been a significant number of media requests regarding Travis’ arrest including the dash cam video. On Aug. 7, Travis was driving his Pontiac Trans Am and was involved in a traffic accident in Tioga, a town that’s 60 miles north of the Dallas area, and suffered with minor bruises and cuts. It was Travis’ second arrest and two of three altercations that involved police in 2012.

Travis has vowed to quit drinking entirely.
