Norway Massacre Raises Questions As Accused Faces Conviction

blastThe world is still reeling from the mass killings in Norway by a 32 year old Norwegian, Anders Behring Breivik who now admits to not only bombing government buildings but to slaying over 90 people in a shooting rampage.

Breivik is facing court charges on Monday for the slaughter of the kids at a labour party summer camp on the island of Utoya.  If convicted he faces only 21 years in prison.  That possible sentence has people around the world in utter astonishment considering the misery and mayhem and death Breivik has created.

It was later discovered that Breivik is an anti-immigration, anti-Muslim right winger who has reportedly stated that his mass slaughter was to support his agenda of nationalism and hatred.  He has surprisingly taken full responsibility for his actions and hasn’t implicated anyone else in the melee.  However authorities are still digging through evidence to make sure that Breivik is indeed the only one involved.

The small island where the shootings took place is located just outside the capital of Oslo.  People are wondering why it took police more than an hour and a half to rally and respond to the shootings.  That unexplained delay gave Breivik more than enough time to not only carry out his murder spree but to secure his position so that he could wreak the most havoc amongst his innocent and unarmed victims including a member of Norway’s royal family.  Breivik had been posting on the web of his anti-sentiments regarding Muslims and immigrants to Norway.  He apparently didn’t like the left-wing branch of Norway’s population and blamed them for their multiculturalism views and actions which he believed were undermining the country.  Conservatives in the country are backtracking away from him in order to isolate his brand of thinking and terrorism so as not to be confused with the mainstream Conservative political parties.

Breivik’s success at the slaughter was due to his being aware the police would not be able to respond in time to stop him.  He came dressed as a police officer thus gaining the confidence of his victims before he opened fire.  None there had a weapon available to defend themselves.  The police say they were held up in responding as there hadn’t been a boat nor helicopter available at the time.  One now would think what if there had been a medical emergency on the island?  It’s obvious that the authorities and government were far unprepared for this type of attack and Breivik and others knew it.  He took full advantage of this knowledge and has set off a continent wide alert.  Europeans now have to watch their backs against not only the threat of Al Qaeda attacks but now from possible right-wing extremists, the same type of terrorists who took part in attacks in the U.S. such as the Oklahoma City bombing in the 1990s.

The public will be on their toes for sure for copycat terrorists as publicity of this event has spread worldwide and seeing that the most he’ll be punished for is 21 years in prison, he’ll be in his early 50s when he is finally released.  Surely there is to be a clamor and protest to Norway’s laws and victims of the slaughter will surely seek government compensation as this is a situation of such negligence and lack of foresight that lawsuits will be flying all over.  In addition, can the public tolerate anymore terrorism and from those who can easily slip past the standard profile of terrorists?
