Kellogg Issues Voluntary Recall Of Popular Cereal Over Metal Fragments
Kellogg is voluntarily recalling 282,000 boxes of its Mini-Wheats cereal on fears that the popular breakfast food contains metal scraps.
According to the company, some boxes of Mini-Wheats Unfrosted Bite Size cereal and Bite Size original may be affected due to a faulty manufacturing plant. The Michigan-based company said no injuries have been reported but exposure to the metal pieces could result in minor cuts.
The cereals that may have the fragments have a best by date of April 1 and Sept 21, 2013 and were manufactured at one plant. Kris Charles, a spokesman with the company, said Kellogg’s number one priority is making sure the foods they make are safe and quality is its best, which is why the company is taking the matter seriously.
Kellogg talked with David Acheson, former chief medical officer and internal medical doctor with the FDA Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, who said it’s not likely that many cereal boxes will be affected by the metal fragments.
This is Kellogg’s second recall in more than two years. In 2010, the company recalled numerous cereals – Apple Jacks, Corn Pops, Fruit Loops and Honey Smacks – due to a funky smell flavor and smell that was later linked to a packaging issue.
