Glancee – Yet Another Acquisition for Facebook

Facebook has recently acquired Glancee for an undisclosed sum. The mobile location service enables users to locate people in their proximity and contact them based on common interests.

Glancee announced the acquisition on its own site. The Glancee employees will move into Facebook headquarters in Menlo Park, California immediately. Glancee was founded in 2010 with the aim to make it easy for mobile users to discover hidden connections and interesting people. This mobile social network allowed users to connect with people with a common interest. Getting to know someone new is rather difficult but since we can set the features of the search with a same hobby or interest, it can be much easier.

The Glancee app is available for both iOS and Android.  Some sources indicate that their services will soon be terminated but official news on this topic has not been given. Several evidence of this have been given since Glancee users are given the opportunity to download their data just in case their service will stop.

Facebook has been on a shopping spree in the recent months by also acquiring location service Gowalla and social photo app Instagram. The acquisition of Instagram has caused quite a stir due to the purchase price of a billion dollars. These acquisitions are quite interesting since Facebook is poised to make an IPO within a few weeks.
