Germany vs Brazil – Hosts Humbled in Record Defeat

As Brazil played Germany in the first semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup, sparks were expected to fly as two of the most potent teams clashed in a grueling chase for glory. Sparks did fly – and that too on many occasions – but just from the Germans as they battered, bruised and utterly humiliated pre-tournament favorites in a record 7-1 thrashing that left even the ardent Germans feeling for the host nation.

Deficient defence or merely incompetent?

The burden of high expectations were weighing on Brazilian shoulders, but maybe even weighing them down. Brazil – Sans Thiago Silva, who got a yellow card in the previous game, and Neymar, who had succumbed to a nasty injury in the same match – were left with high hopes and millions of eyes watching them intently. We are now left to wonder whether the one-sided game was a result of the poor defence of Brazil or superior team work done by the Germans. What could be said is that the Brazil vs Columbia game saw Brazil fighting tooth and nail to win a place in the semi-finals, even if that was emphasized in literal terms – earning yellow cards and fouling did not seem to bother the host nation. However aggressive they seemed in the previous match, the semi-finals showed the weak style of play they had kept hidden behind high spirits and confidence.

11 heads better than 1

The Germans proved that cohesive team play can lead to a cleanly executed triumph as they passed to each other with certainty and direction, their defence putting up an invincible barricade that the Brazilians were not able to penetrate. Within 6 minutes, the cooperative team had scored 4 goals from various players with the attackers constantly snatching the ball from the opposition – the winners and losers were clearly distinguishable and the standards of the teams could hardly be juxtaposed. Germany has snuck up the bench from its narrow wins against other countries, something that can probably be considered the result of energy conservation. The winning team not only silenced any pre-game skepticism but also the passionate cheers and cries of 200 million people as smiles turned into frowns and jumps of joy transformed into tears.
