Consumers Will Pay 46 Cents For Postal Service Forever Stamp In January
According to the United States Postal Service, it will cost another penny to send a letter next year.
Beginning Jan. 27, the agency said people will need to pay 46 cents for the “Forever” stamps. These stamps are usable on one-ounce letters that are mailed in the U.S. even after the price of stamps has increased.
Next year, the Postal Service is releasing a new worldwide “Forever” stamp. It’ll allow customers to send letters throughout the world for a price of $1.10.
For years, the agency has faced a cash crisis. The amount of mail has dropped significantly because more Americans have turned to the Internet for communications. The agency defaulted two times already on payments Congress has required.
The Postal Service does not use taxpayer dollars to fund its operations. Rather, it uses the sale of its products such as stamps, envelopes and more to keep the agency running.
Last January, the price on domestic stamp prices rose to 45 cents. Consumers can still purchase 45 cent Forever stamps until January when the new prices go into effect.
A worldwide Forever stamp will increase mailing a letter by five cents to the majority of international destinations. Sending a letter to either Mexico or Canada using the Forever Stamp will increase by 25 percent. The cost to mail a postcard will increase to 33 cents, a one cent increase.
Postal officials went to Congress, asking them to let the agency to increase the price of stamps beyond inflation, stop mail delivery on Saturday and a host of other changes. From April to June, the agency lost over $5 billon.
Lawmakers have struggled for over a year, trying to find ways to assist the Postal Service to become profitable once more. However, there is yet no consensus on how this can be done. It’s anticipated that Congress will take the matter up after the elections on Nov. 6
