Cancer related deaths are on the decline, but the numbers are still too high.

BOSTON – Thankfully cancer related deaths are on the decline. Some of the reasons are a decline in smoking, earlier detection and better treatment.

It’s predicted that there will be over 1,500,000 new cancer cases in the U.S. in 2010 with over 565,000 deaths.

Death rates for all cancer patients fell by about 1.5 percent in women and by 2 percent in men from 2001-2006 for men.

During a new study the numbers are continuing to drop. This rate is not as fast and one would like but its still a progress nonetheless.

Lung cancer is still the number No. 1 leading cause of death of both men and women in the United States. For women, breast cancer is the No. 2 leading cause of death. Prostate cancer is the No.2 leading cause of death in men. The No. 3 leading cause of death in both men and women is colon cancer.

222,520 Americans will get lung cancer in 2010 and 157,300 will die according to the American Cancer Society.. It says 102,900 will get colon cancer and 51,370 will die from it; 209,060 will get breast cancer and 40,230 will die; and 217,730 will get prostate cancer and 32,050 will die from it.

  1. I recently read on CNN health about a similar condition which could arise as one of the side affects of obesity. What are your thoughts? In fact, ever think about writing an article about obesity in america? I’d love to read it!
