The United States Postal Service’s idea was to end the delivery of first class mail on Saturday beginning in August. However, in a Reuters report, Congress passed legislation that demanded the post office service continue its six-day delivery.
In February, the post service said in August it would drop Saturday mail delivery but would continue to deliver packages. Its plan was projected to save the agency $2 billion each year.
However, on Thursday, the House of Representatives gave its final endorsement on the continuing resolution that would continue the Saturday delivery of mail. On Wednesday, the measured passed the Senate.
Many polls show that most folks support the ending of Saturday delivery for first-class mail.
By 2017, the postal service said it may need a taxpayer bailout of approximately $47 billion if Congress fails to give the agency the flexibility it needs to alter how it works and operates. As it stands, the agency is not funded by the American people. There are some experts who say USPS could be in the red by October.
